Provo River Fishing Report: Fall Fishing

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

Fall fishing on the Provo River is incredible.  With the leafs changing colors and the water gin clear, you must get out and fish.  Last week we had a strong storm front that came through leaving a good layer of snow on all the mountain peaks.  The Browns are starting to become focused on staging for the spawn.  The Provo River is still fishing well through out the day.  The majority of well productive fishing will be spent fishing the nymph but we have been experiencing good dry fly fishing in the later afternoons.  With the weather forcasted to remain nice for the next week, we will continue to witness stong fighting fish and hatches.  Please watch for REDDS and be respectful of landowners.  We hope to see you on the water.

Streamflow: 369 CFS

Primary Hatch:  Midge Larva (#16 – #20)  Caddis  (#22 – #16)  Sow Bug (#20 – #14)  BWO’s (#22 – #18) Barr’s Emegers (#20 – #16)

Best Techniques:    Nymphing has been the most productive.  Deeper runs and faster water have been holding good fish.   Now that that the water is starting to clear up the sight fishing has been good.  Keep your eyes open to fish slurping dries towards the later hrs of the day in soft water.  Now that the browns are nearing their spawning season, please keep eyes open for spawning redds.

Best Flies: SOW bugs (20-18), PMD’s Barr Emergers (18-20), Flash Back PT (18-22), Caddis Pupa (#18 – #16) Midge (#18 – #20) WD 40 (#20 – #18) Baetis (#18 – #20) BEADS
