Utah Fly Fishing Report: Provo River Annual “BWO” Hatch

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

The BWO hatch on the Provo River has just begun and the fly fishing has been good.  The nymphing has been some what spotty but once the hatch begins the dry fly fishing is insane.  During the hrs from 12:30 – 4:00 p.m. you will see a good amount of midge on the surface which has enticed  fish to start eating on top. Over the next few weeks the BWO hatch will get much stronger as the weather and water temps warm up.  When looking for rising fish, keep you eyes open to slower moving water and back eddies.  7x – 6x tippet is what you’ll want when throwing dries.  Please be respectful to landowners and other anglers.  See you on the water.

Streamflow:: 405 CFS

Primary Hatch:  Midge Larva (#16 – #20)  Midge (#22 – #16)  BWO’s (#22 – #16)  Sow Bug (#20 – #14) BWO Dries (#22 – #18)

Best Techniques:  Because of the higher flows keep your drifts in tight.  Fish are holding close to the banks, deep slow runs,  and shallow riffles.  When fishing the nymph use small midge, baetis and sow bugs.  When fishing the dry throw small Parachute Adams, CDC Biot BWO.

Best Flies: SOW bugs (20-18), BWO Barr Emergers (18-20), BWO dries (#20 – #18), Zebra Midges (16-24), Flash Back PT (18-22), RS2 (18-20)Parachute Adams (#20 – #18)

Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

The fishing on the Lower Provo is starting to turn on.  During the hours from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. We’ve been seeing  good Midge hatches bring up nice size fish.   Nymphing has been the most consistent rig to fish through out the majority of the day.  Keep you eyes open for rising trout within inches of the bank.  Keep a good assortment of flies that range in diffrent size and color.  Smaller the better.  Fish are starting chowing the Sow Bug too.  We hope to see you on the water.  Be safe.
