Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

Spring time is here and the Provo River is fishing better now then is has all year. With the lower Provo River water flows just above 230 CFS the BWO and Midge hatches have been insane. Early morning have not been the best time to be on the water. The prime hrs for fishing on the Provo River start around 10:30 a.m. and end at dusk. If your an angler seeking out rising trout, we’d suggest you target the hrs from 1:30 – 5:00 p.m. I’d dare say that some of the biggest Rainbows I’ve seen on the Provo ever have been caught lately on BWO’s and Midge dries. With some of the rain lately, the lower section on the lower has been a little off color. The upper reached on the lower have been much more clear making for great sight fishing. Get out and fish, you won’t regret it. As always, please be respectful of other anglers and propertly owners. See you on the river.

Streamflow:: 237 CFS

Primary Hatch: Midge Larva (#16 – #20) Midge (#22 – #16) BWO’s (#22 – #16) Sow Bug (#20 – #14) BWO Dries (#22 – #18)

Best Techniques: Any technique will produce good results. If fishing the nymph, make sure you have the correct weight and depth and fish fast water, slow water and seams. If you fishing the dry, make sure to use lighter tippet (6X), small bugs and good drifts. The fish seem to be a bit more pickly towards the BWO patterns then the Midge.

Best Flies: SOW bugs (20-18), BWO Barr Emergers (18-20), BWO dries (#20 – #18), Zebra Midges (16-24), Flash Back PT (18-22), RS2 (18-20)Parachute Adams (#20 – #18), Buffalo Midge (18 – 16),Wiggle Worm (14-16)

Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

Spring has offically began and fisherman and trout know it. The last few weeks we’ve seen river levels on the Provo River gradually rising each week. Typically when rivers rise significantly during a short period of time, fish normally take a few days to adjust. Water clarity on the Lower Provo River has been somewhat murky because of the warmer temps, where as the Middle Provo River has been running Gin clear. The reason the Lower Provo has been running off color is “little deer creek” is flowing high and muddy. With that said, the lower reaches on the lower Provo have been clear making for great sight fishing. Typically in March we start witnessing our annual BWO’s hatch become very abundant, but as of yet it has been somewhat sporadic. Usually on the Provo we see more Midge on sunny days and BWO’s on more overcast days. The hours from 11:30 – 3:00 p.m. have been the most consistent when fishing dries. The Middle Provo Rive has been the place the last few weeks for incrediable dry fly fishing. Make sure your dry fly box is well stacked with Buffalo Midge and BWO dries. Use LOON and Frog’s Fanny floatants together to dress your fly. We hope to see you on the water soon.

Streamflow:: 275 CFS

Primary Hatch: Midge Larva (#16 – #20) Midge (#22 – #16) BWO’s (#22 – #16) Sow Bug (#20 – #14) BWO Dries (#22 – #18)

Best Techniques: Fish are holding close to the banks, deep slow runs, and shallow riffles. When fishing the nymph use small midge, baetis and sow bugs. When fishing the dry throw small Parachute Adams, CDC Biot BWO.

Best Flies: SOW bugs (20-18), BWO Barr Emergers (18-20), BWO dries (#20 – #18), Zebra Midges (16-24), Flash Back PT (18-22), RS2 (18-20)Parachute Adams (#20 – #18), Buffalo Midge (18 – 16),Wiggle Worm (14-16)

TIPS for winter/spring fly fishing in Utah.

1. The single biggest key to enjoying your time on the river is good gear. A four layer upper and two layer lower work best. Start with a a good heavy weight base layer, followed by a light to mid weight zip neck. For the bottom keep it simple: another heavy, quality base layer with a pair of good heavy fleece pants will keep you warm. Don’t forget a good pair of ski socks, beanie and a pair of fleece fingerless gloves. A good pair of polarized sun glasses can help you see river structure and fish.

2. Finding fish in the winter can be one of the most challenging aspects of the sport of fly fishing. Trout tend to hold in slower deeper holes and and when there’s one fish, there’s going to be several.

3. Keep your flies small and simple. Some of the better winter fly patterns are Zebra Midge, Disco Midge, Barr Emerger, Parachute Adams, Sow Bugs. Also, make sure you have a few egg patterns because the Rainbow Trout are notorious for eating eggs during the colder months.

4. The annual Spring Blue Wing Olive (BWO) hatch starts around the last week of February and runs into May. The BWO is a small mayfly that ranges in sizes from #22 – #16 and have a grayish olive body. This time of year is a great time to catch your Trophy trout.

5. Early morning are normally the slowest fishing of the day during the early Spring. With the least insect activity and colder temps, the fish are less active. As the day progresses and the weather and water warms, insect become more active as do the fish.

6. Don’t leave fish to find fish. The Provo River has an average of 3,500 fish per square mile so make sure you fish your run as effective as possible. Change your flies, change weight, walk up and out two steps to cover more water. A good fisherman is one the thinks outside the box and adapts to different situations.

Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

The annual BWO (blue wing olive) hatch is almost here. With the days becoming longer, temps on the rise, its a guarantee that fishing is going to turn on. The last few weeks on the Provo River, we’ve seen that trout (mainly Rainbow) have been much more aggressive eating the fly. There are some good fish that are looking up eating small midge, but mainly fish are feeding in the main channels. Nine times out of ten trout are actively feeding in the mid water column to sub-surface. Water clarity it perfect for sight fishing, so have some fun putting you fly right on top of your fish. As always, please watch for spawning Redd’s and continue to be respectful of other anglers and property owners. We hope you all make it on to the water soon. FISH ON!

Best Techniques: Fish are holding in deep slow moving water. Deep nymph rigs are often the best type of rigs to run this time of year. Don’t rule out fish being stacked in faster moving water such as riffles, drop offs and seams. If you are just wanting to fish the dry, keep you eyes open to slow slick moving water.

Best Flies: SOW bugs (20-18),  Zebra Midge (18-20), RS2 (18-22), JuJu Baetis(#18 – #16) Small Parachute Adams  (#20 – #18) Eggs (#16 – #20) BEADS

Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

We hope everyone is getting off to a good start for 2012 and enjoying some good time on the water. The Winter so far in Utah has been very mild. With temps being unseasonably high for the last few months, the Provo and Weber Rivers have been fishing well. We’ve seen good midge hatch’s during mid day on both the middle and lower sections of the Provo River. Fishing nymphs and small midge dries have been the most consistent thus far. Rainbow are very eager to eat SOW BUGS as well. The last few days the Rainbows we’ve caught have been very aggressive making for an exciting catch. With the majority of this week calling for cloud cover and snow, you can count on trout feeding on the surface. Make sure your fly box is stacked with your favorite small dry fly patterns and have a spool of 6x tippet handy. As always, please continue to be mindful of property owners and other Anglers. Hope to see you all on the river soon.

Fall fishing on the Provo River is incredible. With the leafs changing colors and the water gin clear, you must get out and fish. Last week we had a strong storm front that came through leaving a good layer of snow on all the mountain peaks. The Browns are starting to become focused on staging for the spawn. The Provo River is still fishing well through out the day. The majority of well productive fishing will be spent fishing the nymph but we have been experiencing good dry fly fishing in the later afternoons. With the weather forcasted to remain nice for the next week, we will continue to witness stong fighting fish and hatches. Please watch for REDDS and be respectful of landowners. We hope to see you on the water.

Best Techniques: Nymphing has been the most productive. Deeper runs and faster water have been holding good fish. Now that that the water is starting to clear up the sight fishing has been good. Keep your eyes open to fish slurping dries towards the later hrs of the day in soft water. Now that the browns are nearing their spawning season, please keep eyes open for spawning redds.

Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

Provo River fly fishing is right on track. Everyday we are seeing lots of BUGS that the trout are keying into, making for some incredible fly fishing opportunities on the Provo River. It’s a mystery to us around here why the lower Provo water levels are so good. With all the snow we still have in our mountains, it would seem that flows would be much heavier. The State has done a traiffic job on the Provo River system managing run off. Thank you! A few weeks back the lower Provo was running close to 1300 cfs and today flows are steady at 650 cfs. With these types of water flows the fish have been very aggressive eating all sorts of bugs all day long. Whether your an Angler that likes throwing the nymph or dries, the Provo has all your bases covered. Please be mindful of other anglers and landowners and be safe on the water. See you out there.

Primary Hatch:  Midge Larva (#16 – #20)  Golden Stones (#14 – #16)  PMD’s (#22 – #16)  Sow Bug (#20 – #14)  Yellow Sallys (#16) PMD dries (#22 – #18) Mr. Wiggles (#16 – #14)

Best Techniques: All techniques are good now. Fish are in close and out in the main currant. Now that that the water is starting to clear up the sight fishing has been good. Keep your eyes open to fish slurping dries towards the later hrs of the day in soft water.

Lower Provo (Below Deer Creek)

Springtime fly fishing on the Provo River is in full swing. The past few days in northern Utah has been beautiful. The mountain are starting to green and the birds are singing like crazy. This past winter in Utah will go down in history for being on of the wettest yet. Because of the all the moister our rivers and streams are running abit higher than normal. Here at WGS we are exited and look forward to high water because of the quality and size of fish we have the chance catching. With the water levels on the rise your approach to fishing might be slightly different than usual. From what we’ve been seeing lately the fish are within 1-5 feet from the banks. Sight fishing has been awesome with the water being Gin clear and the trout pushed in tight. Nymphing has been producing more consistant result but don’t rule out fishing dries. Fish are still looking up eating midge and BWO’s. Be safe wading. See you on the water.

Streamflow: 852 CFS

Primary Hatch:  Midge Larva (#16 – #20)  Midge (#22 – #16)  BWO’s (#22 – #16)  Sow Bug (#20 – #14) BWO Dries (#22 – #18)

Best Techniques: Because of the higher flows keep your drifts in tight. Fish are holding close to the banks, deep slow runs, and shallow riffles. When fishing the nymph use small midge, baetis and sow bugs. When fishing the dry throw small Parachute Adams, CDC Biot BWO.

Best Flies: SOW bugs (20-18), BWO Barr Emergers (18-20), BWO dries (#20 – #18), Zebra Midges (16-24), Flash Back PT (18-22), RS2 (18-20)Parachute Adams (#20 – #18)
